SODIUM VS SALT – YES THERE IS A DIFFERENCE
GoodSalt is a new formulation of salt. It is not a salt substitute like Mrs Dash, but rather a new formula of salt. Traditional table salt is a combination of 40% sodium and 60% chloride. One teaspoon of salt will serve you approximately 2300 mg sodium. This is the maximum DAILY recommendation per the American Heart Association.
In the body, sodium is used to help balance fluid. When there is too much sodium in our blood, it can lead to water retention and swelling. This causes stress on the kidneys to get rid of the extra sodium, and the heart working extra hard to pump blood throughout the body. Hence why the finger is always pointed towards cutting out salt for people with high blood pressure.
WHERE DO WE FIND SODIUM?
It may feel like everything has sodium. There are three primary sources of sodium when it comes to our food:
Naturally Occurring: Many food items, including beets, celery, and milk, all naturally contain sodium
Processed Foods: If it comes in a can, box, frozen dinner, or from the deli counter, that food is guaranteed to be full of sodium. This is because sodium helps preserve foods (helpful in the days of the Mayflower, but not so much now). Processed foods account for 75% of our sodium consumption.
Added Salt: Salt is a key ingredient in the majority of restaurant foods. Unfortunately, we have very little control over this. But what we DO have control over is the salt we add to our foods using the salt shaker.
WHAT MAKES GOODSALT DIFFERENT?
GoodSalt is a lower sodium iodized salt that tastes just like regular salt. The sodium content in GoodSalt is almost half of what you find in traditional table salt, and includes the following additional minerals:
- Sodium (57%)
- Potassium (28%)
- Magnesium (12%)
- Lysine (2%)
- Iodine (0.036%)
Traditional table salt contains 590mg sodium per 1/4 tsp (or 25% of your daily requirement). GoodSalt is almost half of that at 270mg for the same amount.
By comparison, Mrs Dash contains only 10mg potassium per ¼ tsp serving. GoodSalt contains over 175mg potassium per ¼ tsp. Men need around 3800 mg potassium per day (2800 mg for women), yet most Americans aren’t reaching this number.
HOW GOODSALT CAN BENEFIT HEALTH

- Both heart and kidney health are associated with uncontrolled diabetes. Lower sodium intake can improve heart and kidney function, helping to reduce the risk of complications from diabetes
- Magnesium helps to prevent insulin resistance

HOW DOES GOODSALT TASTE
I had the opportunity to try a sample of GoodSalt for myself. And it tastes exactly like salt. It has the same fine grain texture as table salt, so it’s perfect to add a little sprinkle on top of proteins and veggies for seasoning.
